Spalted beech platter

Spalted beech platter

Spalting is the name given to wood which has been marked by a decay fungus present in the timber. The fungus is killed by the drying process and will not alter after a piece has been turned and finished. Often this decay is not particularly visible but in timbers such as sycamore and beech the effects can be absolutely stunning.

In this piece the beech has a nice ripple grain and the dark marks, the fungus, follow this grain making for a lovely piece of wood. The turning is kept to a minimum to show off the grain and the markings caused by the fungus.

The item has been hand polished using a natural wax finish.

Approx 12" diam x 2" high.
